I still can’t believe that this was written, recorded, mixed, mastered, pressed to 12” (I know where Anthony got his copy!), wrapped in plastic, put into boxes, shipped to stores, sorted on to shelves…to gather dust. Why? I know why Dee Dee did it, but why did anyone else agree to this? To capitalize on the buzz of the Ramones’ breakout album Halfway To Sanity?
RIP Dee Dee.
Dee Dee King, “Funky Man”
I have the 12” of this inaugural attempt at hip-hop from ex-Ramone Dee Dee (B-side features the “Dub” mix - guessing I’ve heard less than 10 seconds of it). Unlistenable at 33 1/3, the song achieves a tolerable, even brisk tempo when bumped to 45 and Dee Dee’s voice uncannily transforms into Cartman’s. If I ever learn how to burn records to MP3 and learn how make youtubes, that staple of my college radio shows will be one of the first things I upload.
Sometimes i call myself Dee Dee King. I like to hear the birds of paradise sing. I thank the good man above. That he gave me a sexy blonde to love. RIP Dee Dee.
